FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

WANDA LEE BARNES

Wanda Lee Barnes was born in Arkansas on July 15, 1937. She died in Houston County, Texas as the result of an auto accident on May 31, 2013. She and her husband, Elven, had resided in Leon County for the past 27 years and were charter members of the River of Life Church located east of Centerville. Wanda owned and operated an H & R Block Tax business in Madisonville for 15 years.

During the latter part of her life, she spent much of her time working  through her church in various ways. She was a founder of the Food Bank at River of Life Church. That food bank now serves more than sixty families. Wanda also served as the church secretary. She was totally devoted  to her church and its ministries. Wanda also loved her dogs, Sally and Molly, who also died with her in the accident.

Wanda's parents, J. C. and Virginia Laney, preceded her in death as did a son, Charlie Johnson and a daughter, Paula Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Elven Barnes of Centerville; two sons, Ernest Johnson and his wife, Gloria, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Galveston, Texas and Chuck Johnson of Harthorne, Oklahoma; a daughter, Jeneice; six grandchildren, Ashley Johnson, Jessie Johnson, Sabrina Cravey, Patrick Johnson, Shanna Rodriguez and Amie Johnson and eight great grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Wanda Barnes are set for 11 AM, Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the River of Life Church. Officiating clergy will be Bro. James Rosier, Bro. Charlie Young and Bro. J. R. Morris. Burial will follow in the Heaven's Gate Cemetery located just behind the River of Life Church. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

TOMMY GLEN DUDLEY

Funeral services for Tommy Glen Dudley, age 77 of Carlos, are scheduled for 11 AM, Thursday, June 6th at the Bedias Baptist Church with burial in the Pankey Cemetery in Bedias, Texas. Visitation hours will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; son, Tommy (Buck) Dudley; 7 brothers and 7 sisters.

Survivors include daughters; Tammy Isbell and husband, Michael of College Station, Marla Batek and Husband, Todd of Yukon, OK; 6 grandchildren, Leslie Williams, Brianne Dempsey, Robert Williams (Nikki), Lance Raley (Rachael), Shalie Tudor (Brandon), Nathan Batek (Amanda); 11 great grandchildren; brothers, Donald Dudley of Iola, James Dudley of Livingston, Richard Dudley of College Station; sisters, Joyce Rice of Bryan and Judy Lambright of Bryan.

DAVID L. SCHOONOVER

Funeral services for David L. Schoonover, age 78, of Centerville, Texas have been scheduled for 11 AM, Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville. Clay Thornton will officiate at the service. A visitation will be held the same day from 9 AM until the time of the service.
David Schoonover was born October 3, 1934 in Minneola, (Clark County) Kansas. His parents were Marshall Herbert and Lucille (Heggy) Schoonover. He grew up in Clark County and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a master measurement technician for the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America. David and his wife, Wanda, had lived in Leon County since 1994 having moved from Port Arthur, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Herbert L. Schoonover. David died in Tyler, Texas on May 30, 2013. Surviving family members include his wife, Wanda Schoonover of Centerville; sons, David W. Schoonover and his wife, Mona, of Nacogdoches, Texas and Robert K. Schoonover of Centerville; daughters, Gale M. Olgin and her husband, Rudolph, of Frisco, Texas and Laura K. Harrison and her husband, Calvin, of Franklin, Massachusetts; brothers, Melvin R. Schoonover of Florida and Kenneth L. Schoonover of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren, Daniel W. Schoonover (Lacey), Nicole L. Westcott (Kris), Sidney Olgin, Heather Olgin, Hope Olgin, Rashanna Tice, Allyse Tice, Addison Harrison and Brooke Harrison and three great grandchildren, Isaac Schoonover, Aubrey Schoonover and Adelyn Schoonover.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 9 AM until service time at Walters Funeral Home.

LOYD BURREL HUMPHREY

Funeral services for Rev. Loyd Burrel Humphrey, age 84, of Centerville have been set for 11 AM, Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville. Rev. Walter Sanders, of Mansfield, Texas will officiate assisted by Rev. Jim Grable of Centerville. Burial will follow in the L.B. Humphrey Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Walters Funeral Home.
Loyd Burrel Humphrey was born September 13, 1928 in Paris, Texas and was the son of William Hardy and Lottie (Bryant) Humphrey. He had lived in Leon County for the past 35 years having moved there from Houston. He pastored for 54 years and built several Baptist churches through the years. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing. Bro. Burrel’s favorite two things in life were preaching and being with his family. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Bro. Burrel was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings; a son, Loyd Ray Humphrey and a grandson, Joshua Chance Lee. He died at his residence on June 4, 2013.
Bro. Burrel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ollie Humphrey of Centerville, Texas; three daughters, Patricia Grable and her husband, Rev. Jim Grable, of Centerville, Janice Williams and her husband, Ron, of Centerville and Mary Lee and Rick Lebert of Warren, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Tracie Humphrey of Centerville; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

JOHNETTE (TAYLOR) CLARK

Graveside services for Johnette (Taylor) Clark, age 58, of Fairfield, will be held at 11 AM, Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Driver Cemetery near Teague, Texas. Bro. Terry Skinner and Bro. Josh Gafford will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Walters Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas.
Johnette (Taylor) Clark was born on April 9, 1955 in Teague, Texas to Alfred Dale & Carolyn (Laningham) Hall. She was raised in Leon and Freestone counties and worked as a homemaker. Johnette enjoyed riding horses and going to rodeos and also loved arranging flowers. She was of the Baptist faith. Johnette passed away on June 4, 2013 in Fairfield, Texas following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her sister, Janie Gafford; father, Alfred Hall and step-father, Ralph Slaughter.
Survivors include mother, Carolyn Slaughter of Buffalo; son & daughter-in-law, Cullen & Mandy Pickett of Fairfield; Cullen’s father, Asa E. Pickett; step-children, Darryl Copeland & wife, Maggie, of Fairfield, Gala Ive of Fairfield and Lanett Utsey of Fairfield; brother, Sonny Taylor & wife, Jamie, of Buffalo and several grandchildren.

FRANCES ONITA ROACH

Funeral services for Frances Onita Roach, age 76, of Buffalo, are scheduled for 10 AM, Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo, Texas. Bro. Alan Grisham, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate and interment will be in the Keechi Cemetery southeast of Buffalo. Visitation will be held Friday, June 7, 2013 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Walters Buffalo Funeral Home.
Frances Onita Roach was born on October 9, 1936 in Houston, Texas to Johnny Clark & Ruby Onita (Chunn) Walling. She married Samuel Volney Roach on April 4, 1958 in Houston. Mrs. Roach earned her Bachelors Degree in Education and taught in several school districts. These included Galveston ISD (1958-1959), Pasadena ISD (1959-1972), Palestine ISD (1972-1979) and Buffalo ISD (1979-1992) from where she retired. Mrs. Roach had lived in Buffalo since 1972 and was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Buffalo. She passed away on June 3, 2013 in College Station, Texas. Mrs. Roach was preceded in death by both of her parents and sisters, Libbie Eisworth and Johnnie Faye Wells.
Surviving family members include husband, Samuel V. Roach of Buffalo; son, John S. Roach & wife, Lynn of Centerville; daughter, Kimberly A Jenkins of College Station; grandsons, David, James, Kyle and Matthew Roach of Centerville and granddaughter, Erika Jenkins of College Station.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Buffalo Building and Grounds Fund or to Traditions Hospice in College Station.

GARY LAVAUGHN HUGHES

Gary LaVaughn Hughes went home to be with our Lord on Thursday May 23, 2013 at 6:30 A.M. after a long 10 year battle with renal cancer. “I have fought a good fight, I have won my race, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7. Gary was born in Crockett, TX. October 13, 1948 to the late Edward L. and Ruby L. Hughes, but lived most of his life in Palestine, where he graduated from Palestine High School, Class of 1967. It is where he met the love of his life, Louise J. Hughes, and married her on October 18, 1968 and she has been by his side ever since. At an early age Gary worked for Eilenbergers Bakery alongside his father and uncles. After high school he went to Fort Bliss, El Paso for his basic training, then served his two year tour in the Army at Ft. Bragg, NC. While there he received his business degree. He was a certified locksmith for 20 years and worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired in 2004 after 32 years of service. He was involved in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, CB Radio Club, APWY, American Legion, and the Westwood Band Boosters Club. He was a member of the Grace and Truth Church where he was also a Deacon. Gary is survived by his wife Louise J. Hughes of Palestine, two children, Gary W. Hughes and wife Tempie of Frisco, TX., LaVonda Spencer and her husband Steven of Palestine, granddaughter Mary Tyinski. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, which were like brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held to remember Gary and the life he lived, the courage he had and the strength he shared, on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace and Truth Church, 924 N. Esplanade, Palestine. Happy trails to you until we meet again, from your loving family, Weezie, Bubba, Sister Girl and Scooter. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
